How To Unlock Your iPhone Using iOS 17's Neat Passcode Reset Trick

What Happened: In a world where smartphones hold the keys to our digital lives, forgetting your iPhone passcode can be a stressful experience. It’s a situation many of us have faced at one point or another. 

You enter your passcode one too many times, and suddenly, your iPhone is locked, leaving you locked out of your messages, photos, and apps.

However, Apple has introduced a welcome solution for this common problem in its latest operating system, iOS 17, which is scheduled to release on Sept. 18 but has already started rolling out.  

So, suppose you’ve recently changed your iPhone’s passcode and find yourself in a memory lapse. In that case, you now have a 72-hour grace period to rectify the situation without fearing being permanently locked out of your device.

How the Passcode Reset Works

The new passcode reset feature in iOS 17 allows you to revert to your previous passcode for up to three days after changing. This means you can use your old passcode within 72 hours of setting a new one, offering a lifeline to those who forget their newly created passcodes.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to utilize this feature:

Step I: Enter an Incorrect Passcode

 If you enter the wrong passcode on your iOS 17 device after making a change, you’ll see the “Forgot Passcode?” option at the bottom of the display. Tap on it to access the “Try Passcode Reset” option.

Step II: Use Your Old Passcode

Tapping the “Try Passcode Reset” option allows you to use your previous passcode to create another new one, allowing you to regain access to your iPhone.

Extra Security Measure: Expire Previous Passcode

There’s also an “Expire Previous Passcode Now” setting to protect your device further if someone else learns your passcode. 

Enabling this option ensures that your old passcode is no longer valid once you’ve set a new one. Remember that using this feature means you won’t be able to use your old passcode to access your device if you forget your new one.

Here’s how to enable this security measure:

Step I: Open Settings on your iPhone.

Step II: Scroll down and tap on Face ID/Touch ID & Passcode.

Step III: Under “Temporary Passcode Reset,” select “Expire Previous Passcode Now.”

Step IV: Confirm by tapping “Expire Now.”
