Sam Altman Asks People To 'Calm Down' Before OpenAI Hosts Its First Developer Conference: 'No GPT-5 Or 4.5, But Still...'

As OpenAI prepares for its inaugural developer conference, CEO Sam Altman has once again quelled speculation, saying there won’t be a GPT-5 or any major iterations, leaving the tech community anticipating what the event may unveil.

What Happened: On Wednesday, ChatGPT-parent OpenAI announced its first-ever developer conference, slated for Nov. 6.

This one-day event, OpenAI DevDay, will feature a keynote address and breakout sessions led by the company’s technical staff, offering attendees an exclusive glimpse into the world of cutting-edge AI.

While expectations may have been high, Altman took to X, formerly Twitter, to temper any speculation regarding major AI model releases, stating, “No GPT-5 or 4.5 or anything like that, calm down, but still, I think people will be very happy…”

Altman’s message has left the tech community curious about what surprises the conference might hold, especially in the absence of a new GPT model.

Among the potential highlights of the event, attendees can look forward to updates on Global Illumination, the AI design studio that OpenAI acquired in August.

Additionally, there is anticipation surrounding an update on the availability of GPT -4’s image understanding capabilities, which OpenAI had held back due to privacy concerns, reported TechCrunch.

Why It’s Important: The decision to host a developer conference underscores OpenAI’s recognition of its large and ever-expanding developer community, which boasts over two million users worldwide.

Backed by Microsoft Corporation MSFT, the Altman-led company aims to generate more than $1 billion in revenue by selling AI software and computing capacity within the following year.

The parent company of ChatGPT had an estimated revenue of $200 million for the year 2023.

Reportedly, OpenAI currently generates over $80 million in monthly revenue, a substantial increase from the $28 million it earned in 2022.
