Elon Musk's Twitter To Release Encrypted DMs Today — Video And Voice Chats Are Next

Twitter CEO Elon Musk took to the microblogging site to announce upcoming features on the platform, including the ability to make calls and encrypted messages. 

What Happened: Musk tweeted that the release of encrypted direct messages version 1.0 will be released on Wednesday. 

He also unveiled that voice and video chat features will be “coming soon” on the microblogging site, allowing users to talk to other people without sharing their phone numbers.

Musk said the encryption feature would “grow in sophistication rapidly,” although the tech billionaire didn’t clarify if it would apply on calls too. 

Why It’s Important: The addition of the call feature on Twitter will put the microblogging site on par with social media applications like Facebook and Instagram, which are owned by Meta Platforms Inc. META

On Tuesday, a U.K. hacker involved in a high-profile hijacking of Twitter accounts belonging to the likes of Musk, Joe BidenBill Gates and Barack Obama confessed in a New York court. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 23
