Twitter Tells My Colleague His Account Is 'Notable' While Elon Musk's 'May Or May Not Be:' Here's What's Going On

Elon Musk finally re-launched Twitter Blue and announced that legacy blue badges will soon cease to exist. Many users are, however, getting a “may or may not be notable” message next to their badge.

What Happened: Many Twitter users who had their accounts verified under the previous system before Musk took over are finding that they still have their blue badges, but with a pop-up message, “This account is a legacy verified account. It may or may not be notable.”

Interestingly, Musk, too, is in the same boat, with his legacy verified blue badge noting him as a "may not be notable" account.

However, the accounts of some users, like one of my colleagues, are "notable." Simply put, the legacy blue checkmark shows "notable" for some users and "may or may not be notable" for others.

While the official Twitter handle of the U.S. Treasury Department is flagged as "may not be notable," the Department of State account is "notable."

So, people thought it was a glitch or bug with 50% of the Twitter workforce being laid off and relatively fewer employees taking care of the microblogging site — but no, it's "not a glitch or bug."

Prominent social media commentator Matt Navarra told Benzinga, "it's not a glitch or a bug. It's just that it will take time for the change they're making to note regarding why a person's account is verified to propagate across the platform."

"Eventually, all legacy old blue checkmarks will have the same message reminding people that those are legacy blue verified accounts. They will be forced by Twitter to pay for Twitter Blue to keep the blue checkmark. So, it's not a glitch that some have and some don't. It's just taking time to roll out and show the change on all accounts."
