Instagram Expands Testing Of AI Age Verification Tool Globally After US Rollout

Meta Platforms Inc.'s META Instagram has expanded the AI-powered Age Verification Program to additional countries, including India and Brazil.

What Happened: Instagram has updated its official blog post, saying that the platform is expanding the AI-powered Age Verification Program to India and Brazil. It will roll out the mechanism to the U.K. and EU before the end of the year.

The video-sharing social media platform started this testing with people based in the U.S.

"We're testing this so we can make sure teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group. We are also partnering with Yoti, a company that specializes in online age verification, to help ensure people's privacy," the company post read.

Under this testing, if a user attempts to edit their birthdate from under 18 to over 18, Instagram will ask them to verify their age using one of these options in addition to providing an ID — ask others to vouch for their age or use technology that can confirm their age based on a video selfie.

Why It's Important: Twitter Inc. TWTR also took a similar step to filter sensitive content by asking users to confirm their birthdates.
