On Jan. 20, 2021, Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. At the age of 78, Biden will be the oldest elected U.S. President, beating the record of 70 set by his predecessor Donald Trump.

Biden served in the U.S. Senate for 36 years and was the Vice President under Barack Obama for his eight years as president.

Here are five lesser-known facts about Joe Biden.

1. High School Football Star: At Archmere Academy in Delaware, Biden was a star on the football team. The 1960 team was undefeated and Biden, who played wide receiver and halfback, was part of the reason. Biden was the leading scorer on the team and caught seven or eight touchdown passes during the eight games played in his senior season.

2. Ran For President Three Times: Many people are familiar with Biden running for president in 2020 as it resulted in a victory over Trump. Biden ran for the Democratic nomination in 2008 before dropping out after he finished in fifth place in the Iowa caucuses. Biden would later join Obama's team as a candidate for vice president.

In 1987, Biden ran for the Democratic nomination for the 1988 presidential election. Biden dropped out after three months due to accusations of plagiarism for not attributing quotes in a speech he gave. The Democratic party featured seven major contenders and a lack of a front runner. Michael Dukakis, who was the Governor of Massachusetts, secured the nomination but lost to George H.W. Bush, who had been vice president. The Republican victory came after eight years of Ronald Reagan representing the party in the White House.

3. Car Lover: Biden owns a green 1967 Corvette Stingray. The car was a gift from his father, who ran the largest Chevrolet dealership in the state. Chevrolet is a General Motors GM brand. Gifted to Biden as a wedding gift, the car now holds sentimental value to the President-elect.

“Every time I get in, I think of my dad and Beau. God, could my dad drive a car,” Biden said of his late father and late son.

The car was featured in an episode of “Jay Leno’s Garage” when Biden was vice president. Biden received special permission to drive the Stingray on the show because sitting presidents and vice presidents are restricted from driving until six months after they leave office.

4. Ice Cream as Vice: Biden does not drink or smoke. Instead, Biden’s vice may be his love of sweets, particularly ice cream. Biden has been known to love ice cream and can be seen in many outdoor photos enjoying the sweet treat. Chocolate chip ice cream is said to be his favorite.

5. Fan of Amtrak Trains: Throughout his career as a U.S. Senator, Biden rode Amtrak trains to work, commuting from his home in Wilmington, Delaware to Washington D.C. Biden estimates that he rode more than two million miles aboard over 16,000 trains thanks to the 110-mile commute.

Biden planned to travel to the district for his inauguration aboard an Amtrak train, but could not due to security concerns.
