Mid-Morning Market Update: Markets Drop; Vantiv To Acquire Worldpay


Following the market opening Wednesday, the Dow traded down 0.32 percent to 21,409.95 while the NASDAQ declined 0.09 percent to 6,104.76. The S&P also fell, dropping 0.26 percent to 2,422.72.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Technology shares rose by 1.47 percent in the US market on Wednesday. Top gainers in the sector included LG Display Co Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE: LPL), and Ellomay Capital Ltd. (NYSE: ELLO).

In trading on Wednesday, energy shares fell 1.4 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Teekay Offshore Partners L.P. (NYSE: TOO), down 15 percent, and Baytex Energy Corp (USA) (NYSE: BTE), down 10 percent.

Top Headline

Worldpay Group Plc agreed to be acquired by Vantiv Inc (NASDAQ: VNTV) in a deal worth 7.7 billion pounds ($9.95 billion), excluding debt.

Worldpay's shareholders will receive a total of 3.85 pounds a share, representing a premium of 18.9 percent over its closing price on Monday.

Equities Trading UP

Monogram Residential Trust Inc (NYSE: MORE) shares shot up 22 percent to $11.97. Greystar led fund agreed to acquire Monogram Residential Trust for $12.00 per share in cash.

Shares of Celsion Corporation (NASDAQ: CLSN) got a boost, shooting up 40 percent to $2.84 following completion of OVATION study.

Nevro Corp (NASDAQ: NVRO) shares were also up, gaining 11 percent to $82.00 after the company issued a strong sales forecast for the current quarter.


Equities Trading DOWN

Diebold Nixdorf Inc (NYSE: DBD) shares dropped 20 percent to $22.50 as the company lowered its FY17 outlook.

Shares of O'Reilly Automotive Inc (NASDAQ: ORLY) were down 17 percent to $183.00 following disappointing Q2 comparable sales report. O'Reilly Q2 same store sales rose 1.7 percent.

Spherix Inc (NASDAQ: SPEX) was down, falling around 14 percent to $2.63 after climbing 17.69 percent on Monday.


In commodity news, oil traded down 1.55 percent to $46.34 while gold traded down 0.07 percent to $1,218.40.

Silver traded down 1.19 percent Wednesday to $15.90, while copper fell 1.43 percent to $2.6545.


European shares were mostly higher today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 gained 0.20 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index fell 0.09 percent, while Italy’s FTSE MIB Index slipped 0.08 percent. Meanwhile the German DAX climbed 0.14 percent, and the French CAC 40 gained 0.22 percent while U.K. shares rose 0.21 percent.


The Johnson Redbook Sales Index rose 0.7 percent in June versus May.

U.S. factory orders dropped 0.80 percent for May, versus economists’ expectations for a 0.50 percent decline.

The Federal Open Market Committee will issue minutes of its latest meeting at 2:00 p.m. ET.
