Mark Zuckerberg Talks About Monitoring Disturbing Content On Facebook

For months, Facebook Inc FB’s primary platform has promulgated murders, rapes, suicides and violence. The company has remained relatively silent on the controversy, but on Wednesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke out.

“We're working to make these videos [are] easier to report so we can take the right action sooner -- whether that's responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post.

The company has taken heat for both the nature and rate of response to flagged content. In April, a videoed murder circulated for hours before management removed it, and a month earlier, the BBC exposed Facebook's failure to remove reported pedophilia.

But corporate leadership now appears to be taking action. The firm reportedly plans to expand its community operations team by 66 percent, or 3,000 personnel, over the next year to more quickly address the millions of violations reported each week. Additionally, it will simplify the process to report violations, implement tools to accelerate submission review and enhance collaboration with public safety authorities.

“This is important,” Zuckerberg wrote. “Just last week, we got a report that someone on Live was considering suicide. We immediately reached out to law enforcement, and they were able to prevent him from hurting himself. In other cases, we weren't so fortunate. No one should be in this situation in the first place, but if they are, then we should build a safe community that gets them the help they need.”
