'Nashville' And 4 Other Shows That Were Saved After Cancellation

There is no worse news for a TV viewer than hearing that a favorite show has been cancelled. However, the new world of streaming TV content means that a growing number of cancelled network shows are finding a lifeline somewhere else.

Here’s a look at five shows that were saved after cancellation.

1. “Nashville”

Less than three weeks after Walt Disney Co DIS’s ABC cancelled “Nashville,” the show was picked up by Viacom, Inc. VIAB’s CMT. Ironically, Disney will retain a stake in “Nashville” because the show will maintain its deal with Hulu to stream new episodes one day after they air on CMT. Hulu is 32 percent owned by Disney, 32 percent owned by Comcast Corporation CMCSA and 36 percent owned by Twenty-First Century Fox Inc FOXA.

2. “Community”

After five seasons on NBC, “Community” was canceled in 2014. Almost immediately, Yahoo! Inc. YHOO stepped in and snatched up the show for a sixth and likely final season that streamed on Yahoo! Screen.

3. “The Mindy Project”

When Fox cancelled “The Mindy Project” after three seasons, Hulu stepped in and saved the show. Hulu recently renewed the show for a fifth season.

4. “Arrested Development”

“Arrested Development” has a cult following of loyal fans, and their “never say never” attitude finally paid off in 2013 after more than six years of waiting. Fox cancelled the show back in 2006, but Netflix, Inc. NFLX stepped in and commissioned a fourth season for the show that aired in 2013 and a fifth season that is expected to air in 2016.

5. “Gilmore Girls”

“Gilmore Girls” aired its first six seasons on Time Warner Inc TWX’s The WB from 2000-2006. Its seventh season aired on The CW, a network owned 50/50 by Time Warner and CBS Corporation CBS. Nearly a decade after the show was cancelled in 2007, Netflix has stepped in to revive the show and expects the eighth season of “Gilmore Girls” to begin airing sometime in the near future.
