The Dow rose 0.39 percent to 17,967.96, while the NASDAQ composite index gained 0.36 percent to 4,956.02. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.41 percent to 2,089.20.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

Photographic Equipment & Supplies: This industry slipped 3.1 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was GoPro Inc (NASDAQ: GPRO), which fell 3 percent. GoPro shares have dropped 69.32 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has declined 0.94 percent in the same period.

Electronic Equipment: This industry declined 1.2 percent by 11:00 am with Koss Corporation (NASDAQ: KOSS) moving down 4.5 percent. Koss shares have dropped 10.66 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has slipped 0.94 percent in the same period.

Foreign Utilities: This industry fell 1 percent by 11:00 am ET. CPFL Energia S.A. (ADR) (NYSE: CPL) shares dropped 1.3 percent in today's trading. CPFL Energia shares have declined 14.61 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has dropped 0.94 percent in the same period.

Dairy Products: The industry dropped 0.9 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Dean Foods Co (NYSE: DF), which declined 1 percent. Dean Foods is scheduled to host a live webcast of its Q1 earnings conference call on May 10, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. ET.
