Leaked Letter Shows U.S., European Allies Say Iran Has Defied 2015 Nuclear Deal With Missile Test

Iran is in violation of a treaty it signed with the U.S. and its allies last year, according to a report by Reuters. Iran reached an agreement with the U.S. and several other countries last year as part of an agreement to eliminate Iran's nuclear ambitions. However, Reuters reported that Iran is now in violation of the original terms following a test of a ballistic missile with nuclear capabilities. Reuters noted that it has seen a copy of a letter written by the U.S. and European allies that will be delivered to the United Nations. The letter stated that Iran's recent missile tests are "inconsistent with" and "in defiance of" council resolution 2231, adopted last July. The letter also noted that missiles used in the recent launches were "inherently capable of delivering nuclear weapons." It also asked that the United Nations Security Council discuss "appropriate responses" to Iran's failures. The letter also called on the United Nation's chief Ban Ki-Moon to recognize Iran's violations.
