Report: Taiwan Semiconductor To Start Production Of 7nm Chip In 2018, 5nm Chips To Lanch In 2020

According to DigiTimes, a daily newspaper for semiconductor, electronics and computer communications industries in Taiwan, Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg. Co. Ltd. (ADR)TSM is expected to begin production of 7nm chips in the first half of 2018. DigiTimes, cited Taiwan Semiconductor's co-CEO Mark Liu, reported that production of the 7nm will begin in the first half of 2018 and the company has already been engaged in R&D activities for a 5nm process technology. The report added that the 5nm node will be ready for launch in the first half of 2020. Finally, DigiTimes noted that customer tape-outs for TSMC's 10nm node will begin in the first quarter of 2016. Shares of TSMC have lost more than 6 percent over the past year.
