Your Google Apps Could Turn To The Dark Side

  • Ahead of the much anticipating Star Wars film release, Alphabet Inc GOOG is getting in on the action.
  • "Wouldn't it be cool if there was some sort of Star Wars thingy in Search?," Google's Clay Bavor, VP of Product Management asked in a blog post.
  • Users of Google's apps can pick either the light or dark side and then watch the apps "transform to reflect your path."
Star Wars mania has hit Google. Users of various Google apps now have the ability to dedicate themselves to either the light or dark side – and have their apps reflect their chosen path. According to a blog post written by Google's Clay Bavor, VP of Product Management, users can direct themselves to google.com/starwars to pick their chosen path, and then watch their favorite Google apps, like Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Chrome, and many more "transform" to reflect the users' choice. "Wouldn't it be cool if there was some sort of Star Wars thingy in Search?," Bavor wrote. Or, "what if Google Translate could decipher galactic languages?." As one example of what users can do, Google Maps could pinpoint a user's location with a Rebellion X-wing spacecraft or opposing TIE fighter, rather than the traditional arrow character. Users don't have to worry should they chose the wrong side as they can change allegiances. For the very few non Star Wars fans out there (they do exist), Google has left the option to switch off any Star Wars related promotions altogether. According to Cnet, Google is looking to join the long list of companies that are using the Star Wars universe to promote their products. However, the publication suggested that Google may be unique as the company is aiming its efforts "at those who already are fans."
