Where Does Tesla Fit In A 'Cleantech' Motif?

Motifinvesting.com included Tesla Motors Inc TSLA in its “Cleantech Everywhere” investing motif.

The site states, “Going green isn’t just a nice idea. It’s a phenomenon that is driving big investments in clean technology. Worldwide, governments have adopted renewable portfolio standards and committed $89.6 billion to promote clean energy development.”

Additionally, the site noted that “California has mandated that renewable sources generate one-third of its electricity by 2020” with private investment in clean technology has expanding to $244 billion.

“Tesla has emerged as the torch bearer of the cleantech industry. The company's Model S launch in 2012 took the automobile industry by storm and has handsomely rewarded its investors with almost 550% returns in the one year ending September 2013,” according to the site.

Motif Investing concluded, “We’ve seen the future: it composts and drives a hybrid.”

The site listed solar, smart grid, renewable energy, wind, lighting, batteries and vehicles among the cleantech segments. Tesla was the only company in the vehicle segment which was weighted at 18.8 percent of the portfolio.
