Business Insider on Monday reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) may, in fact, be working on an electric car to rival Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA).

The outlet said it had received an unsolicited email from an Apple employee regarding "vehicle development" while making the claim that so far around 50 ex-Tesla employees with specialties in mechanics, manufacturing and robotics have already "jumped ship" to work at Apple.

The Apple employee also remarked the project "will change the landscape and give Tesla a run for its money."

Apple may indeed be working on some kind of vehicle, although Business Insider suggests doing so is "way outside" its core. The publication does speculate that Apple is developing a new iPhone-to-car experience that will compete with what Tesla offers in its vehicles.

Of note, Tesla reports earnings Wednesday afternoon.

Apple stock is up close to 1 percent on Tuesday, while Tesla shares are down more than 1 percent.
