15 Notable IPOs of 2013: Investment Idea of the Day

According to Renaissance Capital, an Initial Public Offer (IPO) tracker, a total of 222 companies went public during 2013 in the U.S. raising around $55 billion, the highest number of new listings since 2000. As a group, U.S. IPOs outperformed leading stock indices during 2013 returning an average 35% with first-day returns of 17%. The FTSE Renaissance U.S. IPO index, which tracks post-offering performance, yielded a return of 61% during 2013. New listings on the U.S. small cap Russell 2000 index provided an average 28% return, as on December 18. The research firm believes that a buildup in the backlog of IPOs and improving economic indicators will offer another dynamic year for the U.S. IPO market during 2014.

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, new listings on all Canadian exchanges increased 50% to $2.7 billion during 2013 compared to $1.8 billion recorded during 2012. The accounting and consulting firm says there were a total of 30 IPOs during 2013, including six in the fourth quarter that raised $582.6 million on the Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange.

Ubika Research has shortlisted fifteen notable IPOs during 2013 across sectors which have registered significant gains since their stock listings and have recorded daily average trading volume in excess of 100,000 during the past month.
