Intel Rumored To Unveil New Haswell Processors Labor Day Weekend (INTC)

Intel INTC is expected to unveil another batch of Haswell-based processors on September 1. Used as a codename for the fourth-generation Core i processor series, Haswell machines first arrived at retail in June. Apple AAPL, which upgraded the MacBook Air this summer, was one of the first companies to release a Haswell-based laptop. The newest Haswell chips are not designed to replace those that are currently being employed in new Mac and Windows 8-based PCs. Instead, Intel is reportedly building a number of new Haswell processors to service a multitude of additional markets. According to DigiTimes, Intel plans to launch 37 processors -- 13 for desktop machines and 24 for notebooks. The desktop variety could include another variation of the Core i7, which would be designed for high-end machines, along with processors for mid-range and entry-level computers. Intel is expected to offer a similar selection for notebooks but with a greater emphasis placed on mainstream and lower-end machines. Intel will also release new smartphone and tablet processors later in the fall, possibly as soon as September. This is a bit surprising considering the benefits that Haswell provides to PC manufacturers, most notably improved power consumption. Ivy Bridge is bound to be cheaper though, and the cost-savings could be appealing to some manufacturers. In 2014 and 2015, Intel's release schedule is rumored to include two successors to Haswell: Broadwell and Skylake. Very little is known about these processors, but they have been fading in and out of the rumor mill for at least two years. For a brief time Intel was rumored to be building the A7 chip for Apple's next iPhone. That rumor quickly disappeared, indicating that Apple may be going in another direction. Later this fall Intel plans to enter the TV business. Hoping to build the ultimate set-top box and accompanying service, Intel acquired talent from Apple, Netflix NFLX and Google GOOG. The company also went on a search for weird employees. Disclosure: At the time of this writing, Louis Bedigian had no position in the equities mentioned in this report.
