The Apple News You Missed This Weekend (AAPL)

The Apple AAPL news cycle doesn’t take the weekend off and this was no exception. Here’s the Apple news you might have missed but want to know.

5S and 5C Side by Side

There still isn’t a confirmed report that Apple will unveil a lower-cost iPhone but despite the hoards of fake leaked images that have appeared, it seems very likely that the phone, called a 5C, is on the way. Redmond Pie published an article that included a side by comparison of the 5C and what is supposed to be the next full-priced version iPhone, the 5S.

Vietnamese site Tinhte, which Redmond Pie claims has a history of legitimate leaks, produced images at various angles of the two phones together. While the 5S looks nearly identical to the current iPhone 5, the 5C appears to be a plastic material but as the article says, maintains the “cool factor.”

5S to have a Fingerprint Censor

According to AppleInsider, the upcoming iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint sensor as part of the home button. To house the sensor, the button will change from a concave design to a convex. The convex design, which will shape the button like a small dome, allows for the sensor to be included without requiring more space in the phone.

Because the button will sit above the surface of the phone, the potential for scratches or more serious damage is higher. Apple will reportedly solve that issue by using Sapphire glass—a material so hard that only a diamond has a higher hardness rating.

The iPhone 5S is only an incremental upgrade with many of the changes happening under the hood but the fingerprint sensor will not only add a convenient way to secure the phone, it sets it apart from its competitors—namely Samsung SSDIY and, to a much lesser extent, Microsoft's MSFT Windows phones.
