Startups to Get a Boost from San Francisco

Tech leaders in San Francisco have launched a new initiative to aid the tech industry, to create jobs, to improve the city, and to help future startups. Named the San Francisco Citizens Initiative for Technology & Innovation (or sf.citi for short), the program was designed to “leverage the collective power of the technology sector into a force for civic action,” sf.citi wrote on its site. “This new initiative will bring together city government and San Francisco's technology community with a collective mission to improve the city and the technology sector.” “The tech industry is growing and creating jobs in San Francisco, and we have a vested interest in helping make San Francisco the ‘Innovation Capital of the World,'” Ron Conway, Chairman of sf.citi, said in a company release. “The Mayor and Board of Supervisors understand the value that the tech sector brings to San Francisco and has a jobs agenda that the industry supports.” “Embracing innovation and the growth of technology companies is key to creating good jobs for San Franciscans today and securing our economic future,” added San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, also quoted in the company release. “I'm thrilled to partner with sf.citi and technology leaders to work together towards our shared priorities of job creation, government innovation and smart economic growth for all our neighborhoods.” San Francisco currently houses more than 1,500 tech companies, which employ more than 30,000 people. The city believes that its tech industry “will soon eclipse the record number of jobs reached during the last tech boom a decade ago.” Perhaps the most interesting detail comes from sf.citi's effort in working with Code for America, which has partnered with San Francisco to work on an accelerator for startups that focus on civic issues. Google GOOG and the Kauffman Foundation will fund the project. TechCrunch's former CEO, Heather Harde, has partnered with Conway to serve as the VP of sf.citi. sf.citi has provided a list of the San Francisco-based tech companies that have agreed to be on its Advisory Board: 6waves Lolapps
