A massive blackout affecting a large area of San Diego County, Orange County and Imperial County California and parts of Arizona and Mexico also caused a shutdown of two reactors at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.
Southern California Edison spokesman, Gil Alexander said the power outage did not cause any safety issues. Alexander said a fluxation in power caused the reactors to shut down at 3:38 p.m., but that the overall plant continues to have power and is working as it is supposed to during a loss of power.
San Diego International Airport is running on backup generators.
