Jack Ma, executive chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd BABA, asked U.S. small business owners to sell their goods in China.
Ma was interviewed by CNBC on Wednesday, during which he explained how China will be the largest importer in the world in the next 10–20 years and how he sees Alibaba generating 40 percent of its GMV from outside China in next 10 years.
The Goal
"This is our mission, helping doing business easier," Ma said. "We choose the name Alibaba because it’s a global company. It’s founded in China, but we basically created it for the world.
"Our goal is that [in the] next 10 years, our hope is that 40 percent of our GMV is from outside China. Not because we need money from outside the world, because our mission is making sure— is helping small business, doing business easy anywhere in the world."
China Will Be The Largest Buyer Of The World
Ma was asked if he truly believes that Alibaba will be able to generate 40 percent of its revenue from outside China in next 10 years, when currently it generates almost nil. He replied, "Yeah, and that’s why we are working very aggressive. That’s why I am coming to States. I go to Europe. And I go to Africa. Maybe I’ll go to everywhere that small business. I think, it’s an opportunity for everyone.
"And the other thing is, because the demand for China is huge, because China today the population of the middle class is almost the same size the American population. And I think, in 10 years we will have more than half billion middle class. China should change from exporting country to importing country. China will be the largest buyer of the world in the next 10–20 years. So we need products from outside China," Ma said.
