“My word! How I wish this was real.” Mostly, that's how people react when watching a sci-fi movie. Sci-fi movies bring in some wonderful contraptions and ideas that we wish we had here on Earth. Imagine how life would be if we had the robot WALL-E from the animated movie “WALL-E'' produced by Pixar, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Co. DIS, but instead of just falling in love with EVE, he helps clean up the great Pacific garbage patch.

Sci-fi movies have a record of foretelling what is going to come. When actor Arnold Schwarzenegger showed us a glimpse of a self-driving car in his 1990 movie “Total Recall,” people thought it was a joke. Fast forward about a decade, the first prototype of an autonomous car debuted.

Of course, robot cops or robots that can do all the chores while you lie down comfortably in your bed are a long way off. However, robotics companies are working relentlessly to create robots to help carry out some day-to-day tasks. One of such companies is Daxbot Inc.

Unboxing Dax

Daxbot states that it is a robotics company that's on a mission to put robots in the service for humanity. The company's first step toward achieving this mission is an electric delivery robot.  While there are other delivery robots in existence, this one is more than just a device.  The team at Daxbot focused on human interaction and acceptance which makes Dax feel more like a ‘Who’ than a ‘What’; just like in the movies.

The Dax robots are apparently capable of both driving themselves to make short-range deliveries and maintaining charming interactions with customers. They are also able to communicate using both nonverbal cues and through expressions, such as ‘heart-eyes’, neck movement, and sound.

The robots use advanced artificial intelligence features (AI) to safely navigate sidewalks, provide interactive customer experience and take short-range deliveries that are not as profitable for human delivery services. According to Daxbot, the robots are capable of traveling up to 3 miles round trip, opening doors, moving in the streets safely and navigating at night. Dax robots can carry anything that can fit in its 13 x 13-inch storage unit. The robots also have the following features:

  • All-terrain treads
  • Delivery scheduling portal and API
  • Temperature-controlled storage unit to keep things hot or cold
  • Collision avoidance

Dax Hits the Road

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company deployed a fleet of robots for restaurant deliveries around Philomath, OR, Daxbot’s hometown and also tested a security prototype to help the robots do night deliveries successfully.

Not only does the robot function as a delivery robot, Daxbot says it can also perform other functions specific to an industry or research project. This is largely possible because of the patented technology around smart chips that helps to make smart, real-time decisions such as when to stop, where to drive and when to interact with people.

Daxbot's entry into the robotic delivery market joins other leading companies that are also working on developing robots to make deliveries, such as Amazon AMZN, Serve by Postmates, which was acquired by UBER UBER and Kiwibot while remaining unique with this sci-fi twist.
