Major Averages Close Mixed

Stocks traded in a tight range for most of Tuesday's trading session, with the Dow and S&P finishing moderately higher while the Nasdaq lost 0.47%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 32 points higher to close at 11,555. The widely followed blue-chip average traded in a range between 11,517 and 11,624. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF SPY added 0.28% to $120.05. Volume was light with just 195.5 million SPY shares trading hands compared to a 3-month daily average of 267.7 million. The PowerShares QQQ Trust ETF QQQ, which tracks the performance of the Nasdaq 100, lost 0.62% to $54.38. A 3% in loss in shares of Amazon.com AMZN weighed on the heavily traded ETF. Crude oil pushed higher and closed right under the key $100 psychological level. NYMEX crude futures added 1.64% to $99.82. ICE Brent crude contracts gained 1.65% to $110.80 and the United States Oil Fund ETF USO climbed 1.85% to $38.55 on the NYSE. Gold also moved higher on the day. COMEX gold futures added 0.33% to $1,720.20. The SPDR Gold Trust ETF GLD notched a gain of 0.15% to $166.88 while COMEX silver futures lost 0.80% to $31.985. Treasuries fell on Tuesday. The iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF TLT shed 0.81%. The yield on the 10-Year note rose 2 basis points to 1.99%. The U.S. Dollar fell moderately on the day. The PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish ETF UUP, which tracks the performance of the greenback versus a basket of foreign currencies, fell 0.36% to $22.25. The closely watched EUR/USD pair is currently trading at $1.331.
