Step 2: Select your number of shares.

Choose the number of shares you want by comparing your budget to the price of the stock. Fractional shares are available if you are investing small amounts of money. Check the volatility of the stock, the history of the company and current events. Only invest money you are prepared to lose because investing can be tricky.

Step 3: Choose an order type.

Order types determine how an order is processed once you commit. You might believe that you buy and sell stocks normally, without any other options. A market order allows you to buy and sell as normal, but there is more that you can do. You can place orders with special conditions, including:

  • Stop-limit orders, selling when the price peaks so you can secure your profits
  • Stop-loss orders, selling before the price plummets, preventing losses
  • All or none orders, asking to purchase a certain number of stocks, but only to process the order if that is possible
  • Good til canceled, an order you leave open until it is time to stop buying or selling

Step 4: Execute your trade.

When you execute a trade, go back to your online dashboard to see the results of that trade. Ensure that you paid the price you expected, got the shares you wanted, or sold at the expected price. After verifying a successful trade, you can use that information to make your next investment.
