Kevin McCarthy Proposes Short-Term Funding To Prevent Government Shutdown

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy proposed a temporary government funding solution during a House Republican Conference call on Monday, reported Axios.

This move highlights the challenges the divided Congress faces in funding the government before the Sept. 30 deadline. McCarthy clarified that any continuing resolution would not extend beyond early December. He expressed his reluctance to push the process too close to the Christmas holiday.

The House has only passed one out of twelve appropriations bills and has a tight schedule, with only 17 days in session before the funding deadline. The Senate, returning the week of Sept. 12, has an even tighter schedule with only 12 session days.

There is an internal disagreement within the House Republican leadership regarding which appropriations bill to prioritize. Some members advocate for the Homeland Security appropriations bill over an agriculture bill that faced opposition and was postponed.

Conservatives might resist a continuing resolution. Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) expressed his willingness to force a shutdown, while Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) questioned the risks of a temporary shutdown.
