  • Amazon.Com, Inc AMZN warehouse in Moreno Valley, California, or ONT8, failed to garner enough proof of support for federal officials to call an election, to the disappointment of its thousands of workers.
  • Inside ONT8, Nannette Plascencia told the Wall Street Journal she had faced several obstacles as she sought to organize co-workers.
  • Some of the initial workers Plascencia talked to have left, she added. Amazon says many employees who leave, come back and reapply.
  • Amazon brought in consultants and began holding meetings inside the facility, discouraging workers from supporting the union.
  • Thousands of workers at three other Amazon facilities, two in New York and one in Alabama, have voted against unionization this year, and organizing work at other Amazon facilities has failed to gain traction.
  • At Amazon and other workplaces, executives moved to improve pay and benefits when inflation began to accelerate this year, the WSJ reports.
  • Workers were likely to continue to organize. Still, economists and labor researchers say unionization may proceed slower than in the past year, and labor confrontations will likely take years.
  • Union membership in the private sector reached record lows in recent years.
  • However, activism among hourly employees rose substantially in recent years as the labor market grew tight and workers highlighted risks they took to produce and deliver food or other items during the pandemic.
  • The momentum at Starbucks Corp SBUX and other companies has slowed down in recent months as organizers struggle to gain traction and company executives boost wages and try to improve employee conditions
  • Price Action: AMZN shares traded lower by 1.41% at $81.87 on the last check Wednesday.
