According to a report from CNET, Research in Motion (RIM) has signed a deal with at least one of the four major record labels (Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI Music) and is close to signing a deal with at least two others. The reason? RIM is planning to launch some type of BlackBerry music service that will run on top of BlackBerry Messenger, the BlackBerry-to-BlackBerry instant messaging tool that is very well known in the mobile market.
The report claims that a test version of the service could be rolling out as early as "the next few weeks." It's unclear at this time, however, how the music service will integrate into BlackBerry Messenger.
With BBM being the last real thing RIM may have over its competitors like Apple and Google, it does make sense that the company would like to integrate something else into the service to draw the attention of consumers.
