Nikki Haley Gaining Support From Voters, Donors: Could Landing Mitt Romney's Former Senior Advisor Help Momentum?

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is among the candidates vying for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election.

While Donald Trump continues to lead the Republican competitors by a wide margin, Haley is the candidate soaring up the polls.

What Happened: In the latest Morning Consult Republican voter poll, Trump holds a 50-point advantage with 64% of the vote compared to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 14%.

While DeSantis dropped in the poll, Haley continues to gain ground and has ranked third for five straight weeks. In the latest poll, Haley held 9% of the Republican vote, gaining one percentage point and placing more distance between herself and fourth place Vivek Ramaswamy at 6%.

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) previously ran for president and has been active in working to unite the Republican party to select one candidate who can defeat Trump.

Romney's former Senior Advisor and Finance Chair Spencer Zwick has joined the 2024 election fundraising team for Haley according to a report from Axios.

"Nikki Haley has the vision, the record, and the campaign apparatus to win both the primary and general election," Zwick said in a statement seen by Axios. "I'm proud to support her efforts and help her build stronger relationships with donors and business leaders around the country."

Zwick is a founding partner at Solamere Capital, which counts Romney's son Tagg Romney as a founding partner, and former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as a partner.

Why It's Important: The news comes as reports show donors interested in backing Haley as a potential candidate to defeat both Trump in the primary and President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election.

Axios said Ken Griffin and Jamie Dimon are among the big names who could be donating to Haley's campaign.

A recent report from the Financial Times also links names such as BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, former Goldman Sachs President Gary Cohn, billionaire investor Stanley Durckenmiller and more to supporting or nearing support for Haley.

The campaign for Haley ended September with $11.5 million in funds. Plans call for $10 million to be spent on advertising in states like Iowa and New Hampshire, which are among the early states to vote in the Republican primary race.

There's also the wild card of the Americans for Prosperity Action political action committee, which has raised over $70 million. The PAC led by billionaire Charles Koch plans on backing a Republican candidate other than Trump.

Haley has been benefitting from strong performances in the Republican primary debates and is also said to be gaining support as other candidates drop out of the race.

Adding a top political financer like Zwick could be the item that pushes Haley over the edge and helps her secure top donations and continue momentum towards defeating Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary race.
