Former President Donald Trump is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, Sept. 6, in a criminal case alleging he attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. According to a state court docket released Monday morning, the arraignment will take place in Fulton County, Georgia.
What Is Arraignment?
An arraignment is a formal reading of charges brought against a defendant in a court of law. Following an indictment, an arraignment is the next step in a criminal court case and signifies the start of the official court case. Typically, a defendant will either plead guilty or not guilty at the arraignment.
The 18 other defendants included in Trump’s case are expected to be arraigned later that day. Trump’s arraignment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. ET, and he is expected to either plead guilty or not guilty to the 13 charges brought against him.
Why Is Trump Going To Court?
Trump and the other defendants were indicted in Georgia for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The charges allege that Trump and his campaign officials, like Rudy Guiliani, targeted Georgia as well as other states that President Joe Biden won in the election, and tried to get state officials to effectively overturn the results of the outcomes.
