Elon Musk Provided 'Master Class' And 'Best Internship Ever' For Grimes: Musician Reflects On Relationship, Lessons Learned And Why She Wants To Die In Space

Zinger Key Points
  • Elon Musk and singer Grimes have two children together.
  • Grimes shares memories from their past relationship together and the lives of their children.

The private life of the world’s richest man Elon Musk is often discussed and draws large interest from fans and investors in the various companies associated with the billionaire.

One way to learn more is through interviews with past partners, such as musician Grimes.

In a recent interview with Wired, Grimes shares several details of life with Musk.

Learning From Musk: In the interview, Grimes discusses several topics about Musk, despite telling the interviewer she would answer only one question about the billionaire. Grimes, born Claire Boucher, also said she has several non-disclosure agreements and it’s hard to talk about people’s lives who are private people.

“I learned from him, like, the best internship ever,” Grimes said of her time with Musk. “People don’t like talking about Elon, but it was incredible to be right there watching all that SpaceX stuff happen."

Grimes said watching Musk was a “master class in leadership and engineering.”

The Canadian musician also learned from watching Musk leading Twitter, which happened years after the couple split.

“Watching him, I understand how difficult it is to be a great general and do something of that magnitude. Elon has an old-world kind of discipline I really respect. And I think it rubs a lot of people the wrong way.”

Grimes said Musk challenged her a lot, which led to her being better at running her own team and own life.

“I’m now way tougher and smarter than I used to be.”

When asked what Musk may have learned from her, Grimes shares the billionaire might have learned to have more fun.

“I try to soften him up, to build family culture. And he steals a lot of my memes.”

Grimes on Their Kids: Grimes and Musk have two children together, which prompted several questions during the interview.

The singer said her three-year-old son known as X has gone to business meetings with Musk and knows a lot about rockets.

“He knows more about rockets than me,” Grimes said.

In August 2022, X was frustrated with his toy rockets not reaching orbit, leading to the two-year-old lashing out.

“F***in rocket is too heavy,” Grimes's son said, according to a prior tweet from the singer.

Grimes told Wired that they had to stop giving X toys because he was upset that they were not “anatomically correct.”

“He’s a little engineer, for sure. But his obsession with space is bordering on, ‘Is this healthy?’”

Grimes said X had a three-day meltdown after seeing Starship blow up.

The singer also added their daughter known as Y is also “a little engineer” and likes industrial shipping.

Grimes said motherhood changed her and made her more optimistic. But, the singer worries about the intense life that her kids are going to have given who their father is.

“Being Elon’s kid is not the same as being anyone’s kid.”

Future in Space: Just like her former partner, Grimes is a fan of space and the future advancement to get people to places such as Mars.

“I hope to die in space,” Grimes said. “I would like to go far enough out there to where my body could not handle coming back. So it would be closer to the end of my life. Maybe 65.”

The singer said going to Mars would be great and she hopes to see a megastructure on the planet in the future.

“I’d go out there and live as long as I can until I die.”

Grimes added she might change her mind about this plan if her kids are having grandkids and need her, but otherwise, she would like to move to Mars once her kids are good.

“If I died on Earth, in my last moments I would regret it. If I died in space, I would be like, ‘You’ve lived a great life, you did all the things you wanted to do.’”
