Excitement is building among Mortal Kombat fans as Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.'s WBD Netherrealm Studios recently confirmed a new game in the series is in the works, Mortal Kombat 12.
The announcement came in the form of a video shared on social media by both the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account and MK co-creator Ed Boon.

The teaser video showcased a ticking clock that counted up to 12, but surprisingly, it paused and then skipped over the number, returning back to 1. At the end of the video, an animation of an hourglass was shown with the sand inside freezing. Many fans believed this could be a nod to Kronika, the time-manipulating antagonist from Mortal Kombat 11, who disrupted the timeline.
In February, during an earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed Mortal Kombat 12 was set to launch in 2023. The announcement lacked any accompanying trailer, screenshots or press release from the company.
There is also speculation that the game could be officially announced later this month at Sony's PlayStation Showcase, as per Insider Gaming.
