Experts Weigh In On Ozempic's Evolving Side Effects And How To Handle Them

New side effects of the ‘miracle’ weight loss drug Ozempic are emerging, causing concern among patients and healthcare professionals alike.

As reported by Salon, Ozempic, commonly used for weight loss and diabetes management, is coming under scrutiny for potential long-term side effects such as constant nausea and abdominal pain.

A recent study published in JAMA found that non-diabetic patients using drugs like Ozempic were at a higher risk of severe, but rare, stomach conditions. This includes stomach paralysis, which is not listed on the drug’s warning label.

Moreover, the drugs could increase the risk of inflammatory diseases like pancreatitis and certain types of bowel obstruction.

“I do think it’s important to work with people that know how to prescribe these and know how to titrate these medications accordingly,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an associate professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Stanford advocates for personalized dosage management, based on each patient’s reaction to the drug, to mitigate these side effects

Dr. Bubu A. Banini, a digestive diseases physician at Yale School of Medicine, also acknowledged the drug’s potential adverse impacts. Banini urged patients to report any adverse side effects to the manufacturers Novo Nordisk Inc. NONOF or the FDA.

“Generally, I recommend combining Ozempic with lifestyle changes. Avoid Ozempic if you have a personal of family history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, ” Banini advised, noting the drug is not approved for use in weight loss.
