Google announces next set of product shutdowns

Earlier this afternoon, Google announced the third round of its services and products that it plans to shutdown in the near future. The move is an attempt by Google to broaden its efforts and services and integrate many of its smaller products into larger groups for more attention.

The following are the services that will be shutting down, as announced by Google today:

  • Google Bookmarks Lists, which allows users to share bookmarks, will be shutting down on December 19, 2011. The bookmarks within Lists will be retained and Google Bookmarks will remain unaffected.
  • Google Friend Connect, which allows publishers to enable certain social features on their website, will be shutdown for all non-Blogger websites on March 1, 2012. Google recommends that people who use Friend Connect switch to Google+ Pages and Google+ Badges
  • Google Gears, which allows people to create offline versions of webpages, will no longer be available for download sometime in December. The Gmail and Calendar services for Gears will stop working on December 1, 2011. Google recommends that users begin to use the offline features available in Chrome and will continue to integrate offline uses through HTML5.
  • Google Search Timeline, which displays graphs for historical trends of a web search, will be shutdown, but no date was given. People who wish to refine their search to a particular time period can do so using the feature on the left sidebar of the search results page. Google Trends can be used to see graphs of search history.
  • Google Wave, which was arguably one of the most failed products Google ever developed, will be completely shut down in April of next year. The service will become read-only on January 31, 2012; users who wish to retrieve their information before Wave shuts down can do so by using the PDF export feature.
  • Knol, which allows users to "improve web content by enabling experts to collaborate on in-depth articles," will work as usual until April 30, 2012. Knols can be downloaded or migrated to WordPress.com. Between May 1 and October 1, 2012, knols will not be able to be viewed, but can still be downloaded. After that, the service will be completely shut down.

The final closure Google announced:
