Verizon blocks hotspot tethering on rooted Android devices

A new report from ReadWriteWeb says that one of their employees is no longer able to use their rooted Motorola Droid X for hotspot tethering without buying a tethering plan from Verizon.

A ReadWriteWeb employee using a jailbroken tethered Verizon Motorola X without a data plan was sent to this page outlining Verizon's hotspot data plans today when trying to access a hotspot. This is a new development, since the employee used her jailbroken device as a hotspot two days ago.

Verizon starts their mobile hotspot tethering plans at $20 per month for 2 GB when added to a data plan of $29.99 or greater. In addition the carrier charges $20 for every gigabyte of data after the initial amount used.

Just earlier this week competitor AT&T did something similar with jailbroken iPhone users. AT&T informed users that still have a grandfathered unlimited data plan and who tether without a tether plan that they would be given two options before AT&T acted on their behalf.
