Google blocking movie rentals from Android devices that are rooted

Believe it or not, Google has confirmed you won't be able to download anything from its recently launched movie rental service if your Android device is rooted. In the support document, Google stated that users who have their device rooted will receive an “Error 49″ message when trying to download something from the movie rental service. The reason? “Rooted devices are currently unsupported due to requirements related to copyright protection.”

The move to block everyone who has rooted their Android device has obviously angered some users, mainly because not everyone roots their device for piracy purposes, which seems to be what Google is implying here. Many will root their Android smartphone or tablet to remove the pre-loaded software that comes with it, or to customize the user interface. There are others who will use rooting for piracy, however, and it seems like Google in this case doesn't want to pick out who's rooting their device for what.

What do you think about this move? Right or wrong? Are you affected by it?
