When the Cybertruck was unveiled, it was met with skepticism due to its strange looks. Over time, Tesla Inc TSLA reportedly received hundreds of thousands of reservations for the unibody electric pickup.

What Happened: CEO Elon Musk has a backup plan in case the Cybertruck doesn't do well, according to InsideEVs

When designing the Cybertruck, Musk admits Tesla did no market research to see if there was any interest in the vehicle, the CEO reportedly told Automotive News.

"We just made a car we thought was awesome and looks super weird," Musk said when asked about market research.

"If it turns out nobody wants to buy a weird-looking truck, we'll build a normal truck, no problem," he said.

Benzinga's Take: Does this mean Tesla has a more normal truck design ready to go? It doesn't seem the company could just design and manufacture a "normal truck" overnight.

If Tesla wants the most market share, it may be best to release both versions of Tesla truck. We may learn more info on Tesla's battery and investor day on Sept. 22.
