Sony's "Oh, Crap!" Moment: Nobody Wants a PS Vita

Share:

And all this time I thought that a delay was the worst thing that could happen to Sony's (NYSE: SNE) next-gen handheld.

It turns out that there was something far worse brewing: the simple fact that people don't care about PS Vita. At all!

That's according to Lyle Hall and Matthew Seymour at Heavy Iron Studios, who told GamesIndustry.biz (via GameSpot) that if consumers aren't willing to pay $249 for a Nintendo 3DS, they aren't going to pay $299 for a PS Vita.

"People don't want to carry more than one thing in their pocket, that's why Android and iPhone have done so well, they are the devices of choice, they offers multiple functions outside of gaming," Hall told GamesIndustry.biz. "People don't want it. That's Nintendo huge challenge - how do they add value to that?”

Gee, I don't know Hall. Maybe by releasing a few games people actually want to buy?

In any case, both Hall and his colleague are convinced they can see the future. “With all due respects to Sony and Vita, it's a car wreck,” Seymour told GamesIndustry.biz. “And how about Xperia Play? I'd love to pull up the numbers on that.”

While I don't entirely disagree with what Hall and Seymour said, you have to consider the source: they work for Heavy Iron, a company that's mostly known for making games based on Disney (NYSE: DIS) and Nickelodeon properties. Considering that ALL of these games (Wall-E, The Incredibles, Scooby-Doo!, several SpongeBob titles, etc.) are geared at a mainstream audience, Heavy Iron stands to benefit greatly from a world in which iPhone and Android gaming reign supreme. While dime-a-dozen movie games can't compete with the likes of Halo and Call of Duty, they can surely compete with the 99-cent crap that makes up the App Store.

Furthermore, Hall and Seymour completely disregard the fact that Nintendo and Sony are solely to blame for the mess they're in today. Contrary to popular belief, the video game industry is large enough to sustain all the mainstream consumers who want to play shovelware games on their iPhones, as well as the millions of consumers who wish to engage in real forms of interactive entertainment.

But you won't hear Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) fans say that. Because it really, really deflates their argument. After all, it is so much more fun to shout “Apple Rules!” than it is to say, “Sony blew it.”
