All of Apple Inc.&#39;s (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) 5G smartphones will be equipped with OLED screens in 2020, which is likely to spur competition among display panel suppliers.
What Happened: The Cupertino-based smartphone maker is likely to introduce four 5G models of its iPhones in 2020. All these devices will have organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, <a href="http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/Apple-opts-for-OLED-screens-for-entire-5G-iPhone-range">according to Nikkei Asian Review</a>.
Apple first made use of OLED displays in its 2017 model iPhone X and currently has those displays in iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max models. The company&rsquo;s bestselling device &mdash; the iPhone 11 &mdash; uses LCD displays.
A source told the Review that Apple&rsquo;s new iPhones will be equipped with flexible OLED displays but the company was &ldquo;unable to integrate the Face ID module into the display,&rdquo; and therefore the newer models will still have a notch or a &ldquo;fringe.&rdquo;
Why It Matters: According to the Review, OLED displays can allow a manufacturer to make foldable phones and are in use by manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ssnlf#OTC">SSNLF</a>), Huawei, Oppo and Vivo.
Japan Display Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jnndf#OTC">JNNDF</a>), which makes 60% of its revenue from selling displays to Apple, will suffer as it lags behind in OLED development.
LG Display Co Ltd (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lpl#NYSE">LPL</a>), an Apple supplier, has started to produce OLED displays in smaller numbers.
Samsung is expected to be the leader in supplying OLED displays and is likely to corner 74% of the market in 2020.&nbsp;
On Tuesday, Samsung <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/20/07/16526981/samsung-forecasts-23-rise-in-q2-operating-profits">announced</a> earnings guidance beating analyst expectations with operating profits rising 23% in the second quarter&nbsp;to $6.8 billion. The increased revenues were spurred partly by one-time gains made by the electronic giant&rsquo;s display unit, which supplies to Apple.

Japan Display Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jnndf#OTC">JNNDF</a>) is negotiating a sale price for its main Hakusan factory with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) and Sharp Corporation (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/shcay#OTC">SHCAY</a>), <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Business-deals/Japan-Display-in-talks-with-Apple-and-Sharp-to-sell-factory">according to Nikkei Asian Review</a>.
<h3>What Happened</h3>
Japan Display (JDI), a display technology joint venture,&nbsp;is in discussion with Apple and Sharp to sell its Hakusan factory in Ishikawa Prefecture, sources told the Nikkei.
JDI could sell the factory to Apple for a price of between 80 billion and 90 billion yen ($730 million and $820 million), reports the Nikkei.
Sharp has already <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan-display-funding/japan-display-discussing-factory-sale-to-apple-sharp-nikkei-idUSKBN1YU1AI">conformed</a> it received a proposal to buy Japan Display&rsquo;s Hakusan plant from one of its clients.
&ldquo;We are carefully considering it, reviewing the impact that any purchase would have on our earnings, and whether and how much risk it would entail,&rdquo; the company said in a statement.

Japan Display, which mainly manufactures display panels for smartphones, temporarily stopped production at its Hakusan factory in July and <a href="https://www.nippon.com/en/news/yjj2019091300679/jdi-extends-halt-to-hakusan-plant-operations.html">extended the production halt</a> beyond September due to poor sales.
The company earlier said it could get financial support of $200 million from one of its clients (which sources said was Apple) to buy equipment for its Hakusan plant.
It now looks like those talks have turned to the sale of the whole factory, sources told The Nikkei.

Unnamed industry sources said all three of the iPhone models Apple is planning for 2019 will come equipped with high-tech OLED screens, according to a new report by South Korea&rsquo;s Electronic Times.&nbsp;The organic light-emitting diode screens make images sharper and brighter than liquid crystal display screens. Up to this point, the high-end iPhone X has been the only iPhone model with an OLED display.

(ADR) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lpl#NYSE">LPL</a>), which was not directly impacted by the news, was also trading higher by more than 5 percent.
At the same time, LCD iPhone supplier&nbsp;Japan Display Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jnndf#OTC">JNNDF</a>) traded down by 20 percent.
