On the economic data front, U.S. initial jobless claims increased by 17,000 from the previous week to a reading of 242,000 during the first week of December, compared to market estimates of 220,000. Core producer prices increased by 0.2% month-over-month in November compared to a 0.3% increase in the previous month, which is in line with market expectations.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with healthcare, consumer discretionary, and communication services stocks recording the biggest losses on Thursday. However, consumer staples stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 234 points to 43,914.12 on Thursday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.54% to 6,051.25, while the Nasdaq Composite dipped 0.66% to close at 19,902.84 during Thursday's session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from 51Talk Online Education Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COE#NYSE">COE</a>) today.

At a current reading of 48.6, the index remained in the &#8220;Neutral&#8221; zone on Thursday, versus a prior reading of 51.7.
The Fear &amp; Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greediness.

Dow Dips More Than 200 Points Following Inflation Data, Nvidia And AMD Decline: Fear & Greed Index Remains In 'Neutral' Zone

An Arizona man posing as an Uber driver allegedly stole over $300,000 in cryptocurrency from unsuspecting passengers, according to a report on Thursday. 
What Happened: The accused, Nuruhussein Hussein, pretended to be an Uber driver and picked up people waiting at a Scottsdale hotel, FOX 10 Phoenix <a href="https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/fake-uber-driver-allegedly-stole-thousands-crypto-from-customers">reported</a>, citing the Scottsdale Police Department. 
The alleged scam began with Hussein calling out the names of potential Uber passengers he witnessed waiting for their rides.
Authorities alleged that Hussein asked his passengers to unlock their phones and hand them over to him to help troubleshoot when the app did not recognize him as the driver. Once in control of the victims&#8217; devices, he deceitfully transferred funds from their digital wallets to his own, with the total amount stolen estimated to be around $302,000.
Court documents indicated that one victim handed over his phone to Hussein in October, who drove a short distance before returning the phone, claiming he was unable to connect the ride. The victim later&nbsp;noticed several emails indicating a&nbsp;cryptocurrency transfer had occurred.
Hussein was booked into Maricopa County jail for multiple felony charges, including theft, fraud schemes, and money laundering. The investigation, involving&nbsp;Scottsdale police detectives and Secret&nbsp;Service Special Agents, is ongoing.

Why It Matters: This incident underscores the growing concern over the security of digital assets and the ease with which they can be stolen. 
Last month, a Colorado resident was tricked into sending $6,000 worth of&nbsp;Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) to f<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/41707301/woman-loses-thousands-in-bitcoin-after-fake-sheriffs-dupe-her-into-clearing-fraud-arrest-w">ake law enforcement officials.</a>
The scammers threatened the victim with arrest for supposedly missing jury duty. The victim, under the impression that she had missed a jury summons, followed the scammer's instructions to settle a fake warrant via a Bitcoin ATM.
Earlier in August, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sounded the alarm on incidents of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/08/40132699/fbi-issues-alert-on-crypto-exchange-impersonation-scams" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scammers impersonating cryptocurrency exchange employees</a> to defraud people.
