Nokia's Recent Hire Indicative of a Deal Coming? (NOK, MSFT)


DealBook is posing the question this morning or whether Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) recent announcement that it has hired ex-Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) senior manager to become its next chief executive means that the two companies are looking to do a deal.

“Their past acquisitions haven’t really paid off,” said one person close to the company, citing the dominance of its hardware business model. With the appointment of Mr. Elop, “nothing has really changed,” he said.

The article poses the point that “If Nokia is going to break out of that rut, it may be by following the same model as Android and Apple — cultivating a horde of developers who will contribute the apps that make phones more useful.”

It is possible that NOK would not be the acquirer, but rather the acquired; this is, however, pure speculation…
