EV giant Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) will recall nearly 6000 vehicles in China starting in July owing to a lack of seat belt warnings, China’s market regulator said on Friday.
What Happened: As per the notice published on China's State Administration for Market Regulation website, the recall involves a total of 5,836 vehicles, including imported Model 3, S, and X vehicles.
Certain vehicles in the recalled population may not issue audio-visual seat belt warnings even if the driver is not wearing it, thereby causing a safety concern, the regulator said.
As for a solution, the company will issue an over-the-air update aimed at resolving the issues. Drivers will not have to visit the store for the purpose, the notice said.
Why It Matters: Tesla issued a recall of over 125,000 EVs in the U.S. in late May owing to similar concerns over seat belt warning malfunction. The recall in the U.S. impacted both Tesla's mass-market Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, as well as its more premium Model S and Model X.
The problem arose due to an open trace in the driver seat occupancy switch, the U.S. auto safety regulator then said. A software update will remove dependency on the switch, relying solely on the driver seat belt buckle and ignition status to activate warnings going forward, it added.
