Taiwan Confident In US Support Regardless Of Trump-Biden Election Dynamics Amid China Tensions

In a recent statement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry has expressed confidence in the continuity of U.S. support, regardless of the outcome of the next presidential election.

What Happened: Taiwan’s foreign ministry assured that the U.S. support for the country will remain steadfast, irrespective of the winner of the upcoming presidential election. This was stated in a report to lawmakers, which also highlighted the bipartisan support for Taiwan, reported Reuters on Thursday.

“As the U.S. election heats up, we should beware of cross-Taiwan Strait issues being manipulated as a political issue of defence and attack,” the ministry said.

Taiwan, a territory claimed by China, received significant support from the former President Donald Trump administration, including prominent visits and ongoing arms sales. This policy has persisted under President Joe Biden‘s administration.

The ministry emphasized the need for vigilance regarding Taiwan-China issues being exploited for political gain as the U.S. election campaign intensifies. The report also underscored Taiwan’s intention to maintain balanced interactions with U.S. political parties.

U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-MI) reaffirmed Congress’ unwavering support for Taiwan during a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei. “We will continue to assure our colleagues that this strategic relationship is key for the future security of the region,” Bergman said.

Why It Matters: The assurance of continued U.S. support comes at a critical time for Taiwan, given the escalating tensions with China. Recent reports have indicated China’s military buildup, with a top U.S. military official warning of a potential invasion by 2027. This was further underscored by Taiwan’s disclosure of massive Chinese military bases near its territory.

Amid these tensions, Taiwan has seen a significant surge in its tech sector, particularly in AI and semiconductor technology, which has been driving the country’s stock market to new heights. The assurance of continued U.S. support will likely provide Taiwan with some stability amid these regional challenges.
