Russian President Signals Deepening Ties With Xi Jinping After Election Triumph: 'Our National Interests Coincide'

In a significant development following his electoral victory, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled a future of deepening relations with China, a move that could have far-reaching implications on the global stage.

What Happened: In a victory speech in Moscow, Putin projected a future of intensifying relations between Russia and China. This announcement came after Putin secured a sweeping win in Russia’s presidential election, reported South China Morning Post on Monday.

During his speech, Putin emphasized the stabilizing role of Russia-China relations and the personal rapport between him and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

"The relations between Russia and China are a stabilizing factor, while good personal relations between the leaders of the two nations allow to develop ties even further," Putin said.

"But the most important thing is that our national interests coincide, and this creates a favorable environment for resolving our common tasks and in the sphere of international relations, where relations between Russia and China serve as a factor of stability.”

Putin’s victory was historic, with him receiving 87.8% of the vote, the highest in Russia’s post-Soviet history, according to the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM). The Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) echoed these figures, and initial official results confirmed the polls’ accuracy.

The partnership between Russia and China, described as having “no limits,” has grown amid increasing tensions with the United States and its allies over the Ukraine conflict. This has led to China becoming Russia’s largest energy customer and a significant provider of goods to Russia, further cementing their economic interdependence.

Why It Matters: The strengthening alliance between Russia and China comes at a time when U.S. intelligence agencies have warned of a “fragile world order” due to the intensifying competition among global powers. According to a 2024 Annual Threat Assessment, the challenges posed by China and Russia are seen as significant threats to global stability.

Earlier, China had expressed a desire for stronger coordination with Russia in Asia-Pacific affairs. The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Sun Weidong, called for joint efforts to maintain regional security and stability. This included discussions on enhancing strategic coordination in international multilateral platforms like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), highlighting the countries’ commitment to a unified approach in regional and global matters.
