Mike Johnson Doesn't Have The 'Political Acumen' To Convince For Ukraine Aid, Says Former GOP Member

Adam Kinzinger, a former Republican Representative, has expressed skepticism about the political astuteness of Mike Johnson, the current Speaker of the House, in securing a deal with Democrats to pass Ukraine aid.

What Happened: In a recent interview with CNN, Kinzinger questioned Johnson’s capability to navigate the political landscape and deliver Ukraine aid, reported The Hill on Monday.

"The problem is he doesn't have the political acumen, apparently, to be able to just put it on the floor and say, ‘You know what, Freedom Caucus? You guys want to try to vacate the chair? Fine, do it.' And then he can cut a deal with the Democrats to save him if necessary," he added.

Johnson has assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of his support for Ukraine, but Kinzinger, who had a private conversation with Zelensky, expressed doubt about Johnson’s ability to deliver.

Kinzinger also criticized his former Republican colleagues for not pressuring Johnson to act on the Ukraine aid issue. He emphasized the importance of passing the aid and urged his fellow Republicans to take a stand.

Johnson has been under pressure to approve a foreign aid package, including $60 billion for Ukraine’s defense against Russia. The Senate has passed the $95 billion emergency defense spending bill. Still, its fate in the House is uncertain due to Johnson’s reluctance to put it up for a vote without border security measures demanded by House GOP members.

Why It Matters: Johnson’s handling of the Ukraine aid issue has been under scrutiny as the conflict with Russia intensifies. His reluctance to pass the aid has drawn criticism from both sides of the political aisle and has even prompted international appeals.

Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, recently urged Johnson to back Ukraine, emphasizing the credibility of the US and the future of Ukraine. This was seen as a direct appeal to Johnson’s sense of international responsibility.

Johnson’s decisions have also been a point of contention within the Republican party. His stance on the Ukraine aid issue has highlighted the divisions within the GOP and the challenges of navigating a unified approach to foreign policy.
