Russian President Mocked By Mongolia's Ex-President With Elaborate Mongol Empire Map

Elbegdorj Tsakhia, the former president of Mongolia, has taken a jab at Russian President Vladimir Putin by using historical maps to ridicule Putin’s rationale for the Ukrainian invasion.

What Happened: Elbegdorj, who served as Mongolia’s president from 2009 to 2017, used maps to highlight the vastness of the Mongol Empire in comparison to the size of Russia, Business Insider reported on Monday. The former president made his move in response to Putin’s recurring use of historical borders to justify the invasion of Ukraine.

Putin has often cited historical ties to Ukraine as a basis for his invasion despite Ukraine being an independent nation. However, his historical narrative has been criticized by historians as being inaccurate.

Elbegdorj, in a post on X, shared the maps illustrating the extent of the Mongol Empire’s territory, which included parts of modern-day Russia. He also highlighted Russia’s relatively small size in the 15th century.

Despite Mongolia’s government not openly condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Elbegdorj has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine. In a February 2023 statement, he called on the world’s democracies to stand with Ukraine and provide the necessary support to uphold its freedom.

Why It Matters: Putin’s historical justifications for the invasion of Ukraine have been met with criticism and skepticism. In a recent interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, Putin’s historical narrative was questioned by historians, who expressed concerns about his mental state.

Meanwhile, Armenia’s Prime Minister has also distanced his nation from Russia’s actions, emphasizing that Armenia is not an ally in the conflict with Ukraine. On the other hand, Ukraine’s defense capabilities have also come to the forefront, with reports of successful interceptions of Russian drones and missiles.
