Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has raised concerns about the potential re-election of Donald Trump as the U.S. President, underscoring the need for a prepared political scenario.
What Happened: Lagarde’s remarks came during an interaction at Bloomberg House in Davos, where she was asked about the upcoming US election. With a sense of humor, she responded by lifting her cup and saying, “Yeah, let me have some coffee.”
Despite the jest, Lagarde went on to seriously discuss the potential challenges for policymakers if Trump resumes his presidency. She emphasized that while the choice of leadership ultimately rests with the American people, the global community should remain attentive due to the United States’ significant economic and defense presence.
Lagarde stressed the need to consider all “what-if” scenarios and encouraged Europe to stand strong, reminding that global alliances can change. She also noted the importance of anticipating potential changes, similar to how policymakers approach inflation.

In her past role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Lagarde had highlighted the economic risks of Trump’s tariff policies and criticized his trade war with China, emphasizing its impact on global economic growth.
Earlier this month, Lagarde had already highlighted the “clear threat” Trump’s re-election could pose to Europe, citing potential conflicts over trade protectionism, NATO military support, and climate change policies.
