Want David Attenborough To Narrate Your Life? You Just Need These Two Tools To Star In Your Own Planet Earth

Overview

A programmer got the legendary Sir David Attenborough to narrate his life, and he needed just two tools to get it done.

What Happened: Charlie Holtz, a programmer, used OpenAI's ChatGPT and a Python script to create an AI version of Attenborough.

Holtz shared a video with his creation in action.

"Here we have a remarkable specimen of Homo Sapiens, distinguished by his silver circular spectacles and a mane of tousled curly locks," narrates Attenborough.

You’re not alone if the voice and narration style have you fooled. Holtz used a Python script to nail these two critical aspects of Attenborough's narration.

The AI-generation Attenborough narration does not require scripts, either. "He’s wearing what appears to be a blue fabric covering, which can only be assumed to be part of its mating display," the AI-generated version of Attenborough added in his trademark style.

Why It Matters: The problem of AI clones has grown multifold in the last year, thanks to the rapid pace of development in generative AI.

Hollywood actors, for instance, have repeatedly voiced concerns about their likeness being cloned using AI to say things they've never said.

British actor Stephen Fry expressed horror about the prospects of AI being misused to spread disinformation – he said his voice was stolen from Harry Potter books to create an AI version to say things he has never said before.

Deepfake videos have been here for a while already, with the Tom Cruise version being one of the most prominent examples of it.

Earlier in Sept., malicious actors reportedly used an AI-powered app to create deepfake naked pictures of young girls from a small town in Spain, sparking shock, horror, and anger amongst the town’s residents.

The fact that Holtz nails Attenborough's voice and style to a high degree of accuracy shows that while AI can be used to create marvelous things, it can be misused by malicious actors to create increasingly convincing fake images, videos, and audio.

Holtz used Microsoft Corp.-backed (NASDAQ:MSFT) OpenAI's GPT-4 Vision to recognize him and narrate what he looks and is doing, among other things.

The GPT-4 Vision feature is a part of OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo update. It offers real-time image recognition and could be the stepping stone for entering the age of AGI.
