Rivian To Fix Wrong Software Mishap With New OTA Update, Says No Physical Repairs Required

EV maker Rivian Automotive Inc RIVN will roll out a new over-the-air update for customers after the previous update with the wrong software impacted their vehicles’ infotainment system.

What Happened: "Our customers' experience matters tremendously to us. We're making an over-the-air update available for an R1T and R1S infotainment issue that will restore full functionality to the 3% of Rivian vehicles that were impacted,” Rivian’s Senior Vice President of Software Development at Wassym Bensaid said. They further added that the company is now evaluating its process and quality checks to ensure no wrong software is distributed in the future.

Why It Matters: The company had sent out incorrect software to customers in its recent software update, much to the disappointment of drivers. "We made an error with the 2023.42 OTA update – a fat finger where the wrong build with the wrong security certificates was sent out," Bensaid then said.

Though Bensaid had previously warned that the resolution might require physical repair in some cases, the EV maker confirmed on Wednesday that it shall not be the case.

“Customers should be able to install the software update fix from their Rivian mobile app as usual,” a company spokesperson said while adding that the update will be made available ‘very soon.’
