Mike Johnson, Who Now Backs Trump's 2024 Bid, Once Called Ex-President 'Dangerous' And Said He 'Lacks The Character' To Be President

Recently elected House Speaker, Mike Johnson (R-La.), once labeled Donald Trump as too “dangerous” with a lack of character to serve as president.

What Happened: Previously, in 2015, Johnson, then a state legislator, expressed his concerns about Trump in a Facebook post. He wrote, "The thing about Donald Trump is that he lacks the character and the moral center we desperately need again in the White House," which has since been deleted, reported The New York Times.

In his post, Johnson had voiced his fears that Trump, noted as a “hot head by nature,” would cause more harm than good as a Commander in Chief. Johnson also pondered the potential risks if Trump decided to attack another head of state out of disrespect.

"I am only halfway kidding about this," he said, adding, "I just don't think he has the demeanor to be President."

Why It Matters: The Louisiana Republican’s stance has noticeably shifted since then. Johnson, a constitutional lawyer, has become one of Trump’s staunchest defenders and was even involved in the failed effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election results based on unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud.

When asked about his previous criticisms, Johnson stated that his views evolved after getting to know Trump personally. He expressed appreciation for Trump’s qualities, labeling him an “extraordinary president.”

On Tuesday, Johnson further confirmed his support for Trump on CNBC, stating, "I'm all in for President Trump. I expect he'll be our nominee."
