Tesla Users Continue To Request Removal Of Steering Wheel 'Nag' Despite Musk's Promises For A Fix

Tesla Inc TSLA vehicle users are still struggling with its ‘steering wheel nag’ while under full self-driving mode despite CEO Elon Musk‘s multiple proposed timelines for a fix. The CEO is seemingly also aware of it.

What Happened: “Agreed,” Musk wrote on X to an FSD enthusiast calling for a fix to the nag yet again.

“Steering wheel nags need to be removed. Cabin camera is the way forward,” the user wrote while also sharing a post recounting the difficulty of teaching new drivers how to satisfy the steering wheel nag without accidentally disengaging the car’s autonomous driving features. “The steering wheel nags make things more dangerous not safer,” the post said.

The steering wheel nag prompts users to apply pressure on the steering wheels when an autopilot or FSD beta is enabled. If the driver does not heed the visual prompts on the touch screen, it escalates into a beeping noise. While meant to improve safety, users have flagged that getting the vehicle to identify their hands on the wheel is difficult.

The cabin camera, meanwhile, determines the driver's inattentiveness and provides audible alerts to revert the driver's attention to the road. Currently, both camera and steering wheel inputs are monitored to assess driver attentiveness.

Why It Matters: Musk has said several times in the past that a fix is on the way. However, it hasn’t materialized to date, and the demand for a fix continues.

At the end of last year, Musk said that an update is coming, at least for select Tesla users who have driven more than 10,000 miles on FSD beta to switch off the nag. In April, Musk said, "We are gradually reducing it, proportionate to improved safety."

In July, he said that an update is coming soon. However, the complaint persists.
